- la langue maternelle ;
- la langue principalement utilisée au domicile ;
- la langue habituellement parlée ;

# Hausa Language

> The Hausa language: a space of use and comprehension estimated on this page at more than 300 million people, a long-standing international reach, historical connections and why published figures differ.

URL: https://hausasenegal.hikmavoyage.com/harshen-hausa.html
Language: en

## More than 300 million people across the global Hausa language space

Hausa is one of Africa’s major languages of communication and an international language whose influence extends far beyond the borders of the historical Hausa homeland and beyond the number of people who identify it as their mother tongue.

Its main area of use covers Nigeria and Niger, alongside substantial communities of speakers in Ghana, Sudan, Chad, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, the Central African Republic, Gabon, Mali and several other African countries. Hausa is also present among significant communities established in the Middle East, particularly in Saudi Arabia, as well as in Europe and North America.

Taking into account native speakers, the millions of people who use it as a second language, and those who use it as a lingua franca in trade, travel, media, religious life and social relations, **the actual global space of Hausa use and comprehension is estimated here at more than 300 million people worldwide**.

## A language with a long-standing international reach

The international importance of Hausa did not begin with the digital age.

As early as the 1950s, several states and major international broadcasting organizations had developed programmes specifically in Hausa for large African audiences.

Egypt was among the pioneers of this history. As early as 1956, Egyptian broadcasting directed towards West Africa offered programmes in Hausa. This presence even predates the launch of BBC Hausa in London in 1957.

Over the decades, several major international media organizations have developed services entirely dedicated to Hausa: **Radio Cairo in Egypt, the BBC in the United Kingdom, Voice of America in the United States, Deutsche Welle in Germany, Radio France Internationale in France and China Radio International in China**, among others.

Saudi Arabia has also included Hausa in its international broadcasting services, particularly in programmes intended for pilgrims. Archives document the official broadcasting of information relating to the pilgrimage **in several other languages of international communication, including Hausa**.

The fact that states and media institutions established across several continents have created, developed and maintained services specifically in Hausa for many decades is a concrete indicator of the international dimension of the language and the importance of its transnational audience.

## A lingua franca beyond ethnic identity

Speaking Hausa and belonging to the Hausa people are two different realities.

Millions of people belonging to other African communities use Hausa as a second language or as a language of everyday communication. This is particularly visible in markets, transport, major cities, commercial areas, some religious communities and cross-border spaces across the Sahel, West Africa and parts of Central Africa.

For this reason, a count based solely on ethnic identity or mother tongue cannot, by itself, represent the true extent of the Hausa linguistic space.

## Historical connections reaching deep into African history

Hausa belongs to the Chadic branch of the large Afroasiatic language family. Ancient Egyptian also belonged to the Afroasiatic family, although in a different branch. Research in historical linguistics therefore identifies common linguistic inheritances reaching back to Proto-Afroasiatic.

Comparative studies have examined correspondences between Hausa and Ancient Egyptian, particularly in vocabulary and certain grammatical systems.

African authors and other researchers have also developed broader hypotheses concerning ancient relationships between Egypt, the Sahara and different populations of West Africa. Some of this research proposes particular historical relationships involving the Hausa.

These questions constitute an area of historical, linguistic and archaeological research that deserves to be presented together with its sources, arguments and the different scientific studies devoted to it.

## Why do published figures differ?

**There is currently no exhaustive worldwide linguistic census that individually counts, for every language in the world, all people who are able to speak or understand it.**

The United Nations collects and publishes certain linguistic statistics derived from national censuses. However, not all states collect the same linguistic information, and the methodologies used are not uniform.

Depending on the country, a census may measure:

- mother tongue;
- the language mainly used at home;
- the language usually spoken;
- or the ability to speak one or more specified languages.

These categories do not measure exactly the same reality. In addition, many countries do not systematically collect detailed linguistic data.

The United Nations Statistics Division itself explains that the international linguistic data available **do not make it possible to determine directly how many people in the world speak a particular language**, notably because of these methodological differences and the absence of data for many countries.

UNESCO also undertakes extensive global work documenting languages through its World Atlas of Languages. The Atlas records several thousand languages and gathers extensive information on their situation, but it likewise does not constitute an individual worldwide census of everyone who speaks or understands each language.

This difficulty therefore concerns **all languages of the world**, not Hausa specifically.

It is particularly significant for major cross-border lingua francas such as Hausa, because a person may use the language every day to communicate, trade, travel, follow the media or participate in social life without declaring it as their mother tongue.

## Different estimates depending on methodology

Available estimates therefore rely on different methodologies.

Some primarily count native speakers. Others add people who report Hausa as a second language. Others attempt to estimate its use as a lingua franca.

Some linguistic references consequently publish figures close to 100 million speakers, while other academic studies and publications have advanced estimates reaching approximately 150 million.

**These figures are neither a worldwide linguistic census conducted by the United Nations nor an official worldwide count produced by UNESCO.**

The estimate of more than **300 million** presented on this page adopts a different and broader approach: it considers the functional Hausa language space — first language, second language, lingua franca and active comprehension — across the different countries where Hausa functions as a genuine means of communication.

## Sources and transparency

The documentary statements presented on this page draw in particular on institutional, academic and historical sources: the United Nations, UNESCO, official Egyptian information and broadcasting services, BBC archives, Saudi broadcasting archives, academic research devoted to Hausa and the Afroasiatic language family, scientific publications, as well as national demographic statistics.
